Capability Brown Symposium

Interested in learning more of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown and his working ways? Then here is news of an upcoming event organised between the Humanities Research Institute of Buckingham University and Compton Verney.

In the symposium described below, leading lights from the world of garden and landscape history will present on topical subjects that link the renowned landscape designer to the period in which he worked. Text taken from University of Buckingham Website:

HRI and Compton Verney Symposium: Capability Brown and the Georgian Landscape (24 June 2014)

In the run-up to Lancelot Brown’s tercentenary in 2016, and following on from the Gallery’s recent exhibition on Brown’s work in the Midlands, Compton Verney will be hosting a one-day symposium on Brown’s achievements in shaping the eighteenth century landscape. The day will begin with coffee at 10:00 and end at 18:00. The speakers are: Dr Laura Mayer on Brown’s methodology and practice; Dr Kate Felus on the social use of Brown’s landscapes; Steffie Shields on water management in Brown’s parks. Head of Landscape and Gardens, Gary Webb, will take delegates on a guided walk around the Brownian landscape at Compton Verney, after which the day will end with a tour of the Gallery led by the Director, Dr Steven Parissien.

Numbers are limited to 60 delegates. The cost is £40 (no concessions) to include coffee, tea and lunch.
