Talk: Hidcote Garden ‘An Arts and Crafts Masterpiece’

Compton Verney doesn’t possess an Arts and Crafts garden, being on the whole an earlier, 18th century creation by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. However, just thirteen miles away in the Cotswold hills sits an Arts and Crafts masterpiece; none other than Hidcote Manor Garden.

The link between the two properties arrived with the current ‘Arts and Crafts House: Then and Now‘ exhibition, which references many properties of the period, including the National Trust garden of Hidcote. What better opportunity could there be therefore, than to invite Garden and Countryside Manager Glyn Jones, to Compton Verney to talk about the garden.

The talk, this Friday will feature Hidcote as an Arts and Crafts garden, tracing it from its development in 1907 by Laurence Johnson to its heyday in the 30s. Glyn will also talk about the conservation management of the garden today.

Glyn’s talk might appeal to people who appreciate the Arts and Crafts movement, and to people who like gardens, their design and historical development. And of course, with a collection of rare and important plants, this talk will be of interest to gardeners and horticultural students.
