Volunteering

My name is Izzy, I am 18 and about to go to university. I am excited to take over the blog this week to tell you a bit about my role as a Gallery Volunteer at Compton Verney. Some people might be surprised that I’m volunteering while I’m still studying, but it’s one of the best things I’ve done to develop my skills.

I plan to study at Cardiff or Reading University and then go on to a career in the heritage sector, so my role at Compton Verney is giving me valuable behind-the-scenes insights. From how exhibitions and events are put together to what it means to work in this sector, I find it fascinating how the team at Compton Verney is continually looking for creative ways to engage all ages.

Since I started, I’ve learned a lot about the collections at Compton Verney and I use this knowledge to tell the stories behind the art and engage visitors of all ages, abilities, and interests. This is a skill I am proud to have developed and it has led to some fascinating conversations. There’s lots to learn about the expansive collection but you don’t need to know everything to start volunteering. Sometimes I get asked a question I don’t know the answer to, but it’s not a problem, I know where or who to go to to find the answer meaning my knowledge and development never stops.

I’ve met some great people and grown my network and the volunteering experience continues to have a positive impact on my wellbeing and gives me a nice break from my studies. I recommend that people of all ages consider becoming volunteers at Compton Verney.
