Who?

Tarot: Your Future In Foolish Memes (2020) is a work by Plastique Fantastique, an artistic collaboration between David Burrows, Simon O’Sullivan, Alex Marzeta and Vanessa Page.

What?

The work interweaves narratives of folk in contemporary culture with the traditional practice of tarot. CAN WE DESCRIBE WHAT IT IS HERE? INTERACTIVE TAROT TABLE WITH XX AMOUNT OF CARDS

The cards feature artist-designed memes.

In this work, the Tarot deck contains memes organised into four suites:

  • the Zero-City Suite
  • the Traitor-Trickster Suite
  • the Rogue-Tech Suite
  • the Solar Suite

Why?

By using the emerging folk medium of memes, the artists are exploring the entwined history of folk struggle and the adoption of new technologies.

Internet memes emerged in the early 21st century, consisting of an image or message that is altered by successive creators as it spreads.

This form straddles the popular, art that is mass produced, using recognisable subjects and motifs, whilst folk art remixes these in a more personal way.
