Embrace the ice at Compton Verney

Embrace the ice at Compton Verney

On these icy mornings, it’s easy to stay snuggled up inside away from the cold. But, there are many ways to embrace the beauty of winter at Compton Verney in a way that you can’t in the Summer!

  1. Grab a hot drink to warm your hands and heart as you walk around our extensive grounds that take on a whole new life in the ice; either on your own or on one of our Winter Landscape Tours.

Our beautiful lake frequently freezes over resulting in a picturesque scene that can be observed from multiple points on the grounds including on our bridge. A historically significant example of 18th century architecture, our Grade II listed bridge was designed to complement the incredible landscape by Capability Brown and it still stands today as the gateway to Compton Verney like it did for the Verney family, and later the army, throughout history. Standing on this structure you can observe the lake from two angles, catching the light bounce off the ice and the effect of Winter on Brown’s striking landscape.

We are currently raising money for repairs of the historical Compton Verney bridge, you can donate here if you would like to support us.

  1. Shelter from the cold and experience the warmth of Italy in our majestic Naples Gallery.

Due to be rehung for the first time in many years, our Naples Gallery will soon showcase the exquisite historic works reimagined along the theme of the senses, as well as two new contemporary sculptures. Between now and Spring will be your last opportunity to explore our original Naples Gallery as it currently stands, showing fiery scenes of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius alongside warming still-life paintings of tropical fruit and flowers.
