The New Statesman
Our Northern European Collection features treasures produced in Northern Europe between 1450 and 1650. Highlights include portraits, mythological scenes, carved wood sculptures, altarpieces, and decorative objects. The collection includes four paintings by Lucas Cranach the Elder, portraits by Ambrosius Benson and Hans Besser, and sculptures by Tilman Riemenschneider. As artists and craftsmen worked collaboratively at this time many other makers remain anonymous. This year, a redisplay of the collection has provided an opportunity to look at some of these pieces in more detail.
