Consisting of a collection of differently-sized green blocks ranged across Compton Verney’s Old Town Meadow, the installation highlights the history of the land: once the site of the medieval village of Compton Murdak, the meadow was planted with trees by Capability Brown in the 18th century, but these were ploughed up in the 1960s.
Echoing ancient monoliths, the installation playfully references the lost histories of the site. Paths and picnic benches are integral to the design, transforming the meadow into a destination to explore and enjoy, and providing an exciting opportunity to re-frame familiar views of the Grade-I listed mansion house and Grade-II listed park.
The eyecatcher commission is part of a National Lottery Heritage funded project to restore and reimagine Compton Verney’s ‘Capability’ Brown-designed landscape.
