Alberto Giacometti

Giacometti (1901-66) was born in Switzerland but lived most of his life in France where he became an important figure on theParis art scene. In Paris he developed a unique sculptural language that remains iconic to this day. Giacometti explored beneath the surface of the figure, creating archetypes of human beings, resulting in solitary figures that seem to appear and disappear into a void.

The exhibition at Compton Verney focuses on a number of important works produced between 1946 and 1957 including bronze and unique plaster sculptures alongside paintings of his wife and of the writer and playwright Jean Genet.

The exhibition is made possible through loans from the Alberto and Annette Giacometti Foundation, Paris and other public collections.
