Traditional May Day Celebration

A custom in England for over 2000 years, May Day is the time when communities traditionally come together to celebrate the advent of summer.

Compton Verney’s May Day celebration is the perfect way to start Summer. Join the traditional English celebration with fun-filled activities and games:

Join in with the Morris Dancers between 12pm – 2.30pm

Al fresco dining including BBQ pulled pork, burgers, falafel, potatoe wedges and the Compton Kitchen will be open as usual.

Visit the Morris Folk dolls by the Museums of British Folklore.

Make your own selfie dolls and puppets

Try traditional village games – including tug-of-war, welly-wanging, Aunt Sally and hook-a-duck.

See vintage tractors and play croquet

Live music from the brilliant Royal Spa Brass Band at 2.30pm.

Talk to artist Faye Claridge and Sigrid Holmwood in our brand new Pigment Garden

Children (little and big!) are invited to come dressed up as May King or Queen, you’ll be crowned and then lead the procession at 4pm with the Royal Spa Brass Band.
