Highlights of the British Portraits Collection
Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-92):
A Portrait of Mrs Baldwin (1782)
Oil on canvas, 141 x 110 cm
When purchased, this remarkable painting achieved the second highest auction price ever realised for a work by the artist. Reynolds was one of the most important British painters of the eighteenth century and excelled in society portraiture. A Portrait of Mrs Baldwin is one of the finest paintings, clearly influenced by Eastern culture, but also representing the high point of eighteenth century Western portraiture.
